2003 Indiana All-Star Game
Ben Smith
Ben is from a small town in East Central Indiana known for basketball, graduating in 2003 from New Castle Chrysler High School. Throughout high school Ben competed on many high level baseball traveling teams. He played for the Indiana Bulls for one summer before joining the now, largest traveling baseball program in the state, US Athletics.
Going into his senior year, he was selected to many high profile showcases. These included the prestigious Area Code Games in Long Beach California with the Chicago White Sox, a team that included current major league players Justin Upton and Clayton Richard along with many former and current minor league players. He was also invited to the East Coast Area Code Games in North Carolina with the Colorado Rockies, the Perfect Game All-American Game and multiple other All-Star games.
Following Ben’s senior baseball season, he was named 1st Team All-State along with being selected to the Indiana All-Star team. Ben was then drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 37th round of the 2003 MLB 1st year player draft. Falling deeper into the rounds because of a back injury, he decided to attend college. After receiving college interest and multiple offers from schools such as LSU, Miami FL, Arizona State, Tennessee, and Wichita St, he decided to attend college at Indiana State for family reasons and later transferred to John Logan College in Illinois going 17-5 in his two years there. A shoulder injury near the end of the season ended the hopes of being drafted again in the first day of the draft.
